Charges filed in Joplin domestic stabbing

JOPLIN, Mo. — Felony counts of domestic assault and armed criminal action have been filed against a Joplin woman accused of stabbing her boyfriend in both legs.

The Newton County prosecutor charged Geneva E. Fields, 41, with first-degree domestic assault and armed criminal action in the stabbing of Richard A. Deuel, 37, about 12:30 p.m. Saturday inside their home at 3305 S. Indiana Ave., Lot 11.

A probable-cause affidavit states that the couple got into an argument in the bedroom of their home when Field grabbed a pocketknife from her purse and stabbed Deuel in each thigh as he was lying on his back in bed.

Deuel got up and left their mobile home and walked to a friend's house where emergency help was summoned and he was taken to a hospital. The affidavit states that an artery in one of his legs was cut and describes Deuel's wounds as serious. But police said they were not life-threatening.

Fields told officers that Deuel had been verbally and physically assaulting her when she stabbed him. She reportedly said Deuel was kicking at her while lying on the bed.
