Asia’h Epperson’s dream of becoming the next “American Idol” came to an end Thursday.
The 19-year-old Joplin native was one of four “Idol” hopefuls cut from the program during Thursday night’s results show on the Fox competition. She did not garner enough votes from the public to stay in the running.
Epperson opened Wednesday night’s program — which spotlighted music of the 1980s — with a performance of Whitney Houston’s “I Want to Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).”
She earned praise for her performance from judges Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul. Simon Cowell called it “second-rate Whitney Houston,” but said he believed it was good enough to put her through to the final 12.
The amateur singer captured judges’ attention during her Atlanta audition. She sang a tribute to her father, who died two days before in an auto accident.
The final 12 “Idol” contestants will perform on Tuesday’s broadcast.

Longtime Democrat dies at 81
Sapp, 81, died Thursday. Funeral services were Monday at the First Presbyterian Church of Joplin. A longtime Jasper County Democratic committeewoman and volunteer, Sapp for years was secretary to the county’s central committee.

Mural depicting Joplin High School dedicated
A four-paneled mural depicting the recent history of Joplin High School was dedicated at the Memorial 9th- and 10th-grade Center Tuesday morning. The mural will be moved to the new high school when it is completed in 2014.
