Asia’h Epperson’s dream of becoming the next “American Idol” came to an end Thursday.
The 19-year-old Joplin native was one of four “Idol” hopefuls cut from the program during Thursday night’s results show on the Fox competition. She did not garner enough votes from the public to stay in the running.
Epperson opened Wednesday night’s program — which spotlighted music of the 1980s — with a performance of Whitney Houston’s “I Want to Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).”
She earned praise for her performance from judges Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul. Simon Cowell called it “second-rate Whitney Houston,” but said he believed it was good enough to put her through to the final 12.
The amateur singer captured judges’ attention during her Atlanta audition. She sang a tribute to her father, who died two days before in an auto accident.
The final 12 “Idol” contestants will perform on Tuesday’s broadcast.
