A study that identifies at least two sites, and possibly a third, where reservoirs could be constructed to alleviate future water shortages in Southwest Missouri will be unveiled during a news conference at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, at South Park Casino in Monett.
The findings of the study, funded by the Tri-State Water Resource Coalition, were to be revealed during news conferences in Springfield and Joplin on that day. The coalition opted for a central site between the two cities.
The coalition expects that the proposed sites could generate some controversy among environmentalists who oppose construction of reservoirs on rivers, and from affected property owners.
The coalition has said it could take 30 years to complete construction of a reservoir because of environmental regulations.
Jan Tupper, a member of the coalition, said one of the reservoirs would serve the Springfield area and could involve a tributary of the James River. Another would serve the Joplin-Monett area and could involve a site along Shoal Creek. A third site, which is still under consideration, would serve Lamar and Pittsburg, Kan.
The study, which was to identify multiple sites for on-stream and off-stream reservoirs in Southwest Missouri, was conducted by Freese and Nichols Inc., a Texas consulting firm.
The coalition has been told by a state water expert that demand for water is growing in certain regions of Southwest Missouri, most notably Springfield and the Joplin-Monett area. The coalition has been told that surface-water impoundments will be needed in those areas, but it could be a while before a critical point is reached. Conservation could be a factor in how soon that point is reached.
Meeting set
The board of directors of the Tri-State Water Resource Coalition will meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, in the fifth-floor conference room at Joplin City Hall, 602 S. Main St.
