Thomas Edison appears tonight at Memorial Hall. Margaret Mitchell and Walt Disney will be in Joplin on Friday and Saturday.
The historical figures — actually chautauqua performers — are in town to bring the past to life.
Chautauqua is a five-day event being staged this week that is full of performances and presentations by scholars and actors who impersonate famous Americans. The event is sponsored by the Missouri Humanities Council.
Hank Fincken, who portrays Thomas Edison, spoke Wednesday to an audience at Missouri Southern State University about the challenges an actor faces in portraying a real person. Fincken also re-creates other historical figures, including Christopher Columbus and Henry Ford.
“Who we are is always when we are and where we are,” he said. “It’s hard to know the truth about the past.”
Fincken, an author and actor from Indiana, said people romanticize historical figures too much, and they sometimes want positive messages rather than the truth. He recounted several instances in which audience members became upset because he was trying to be accurate and didn’t deliver the messages they wanted to hear.
“We love the myths,” he said. “It’s easy to focus too much on the good or too much on the bad. History is complex and much more than just facts. It’s fun to try to make sense of it.”
On Friday and Saturday, Debra Conner will portray Margaret Mitchell, author of “Gone with the Wind,” and William Worley will portray Walt Disney.
Cameo Gerdes, director of sales for the Joplin Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the turnout for the chautauqua this year has been strong. The theme for this year’s event is “That’s Entertainment.”
“The evening shows are going to be great,” she said. Every performance is followed by a question-and-answer session, with the actor in character.
“You learn more with stuff like this than reading the book,” said Kim Good, who attended Wednesday morning’s session. “It’s more realistic when you can ask questions and they know what they’re talking about.”

7 p.m. — Memorial Hall, Joplin, William Worley presents Walt Disney with special guest cartoonist Amber Stone.
Saturday
10 a.m. — Joplin Museum Complex, Debra Conner presents “Margaret Mitchell: Movie Madness.”
11 a.m. — Joplin Public Library, William Worley presents “The Disney Version of Fairy Tales.”
4 p.m. — Central Christian Center, Joplin, Debra Conner presents Margaret Mitchell. A screening of “Gone with the Wind” will follow.
All chautauqua performances are free and open to the public.

A Webb City man was assessed a suspended sentence Monday on an assault conviction for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated in an accident two years ago that caused serious injuries to another man.
Justin M. Allen, 32, pleaded guilty March 22 in Jasper County Circuit Court to second-degree assault in connection with a two-vehicle accident May 13, 2008, on Highway 43 north of Joplin. -
Lobbyist: Bill on tax-stacking appears stalled
A fix for Joplin’s tax-stacking exposure has not materialized in this session of state legislative action, as city leaders had hoped.
And, with only four days left before the session ends, not much chance is seen for the rescue of a bill that would protect Joplin, and other cities, from potential lawsuits such as one filed last year over the city’s multiple sales taxes. -
Salary schedule to come before Board of Education
A proposal that would institute a pay freeze next year and slightly reduce starting pay for new teachers is to be taken up tonight by the Joplin School Board.
