Reception to honor Joplin superintendent

JOPLIN, Mo. — A reception is planned to honor C.J. Huff, one of four finalists for Superintendent of the Year, chosen by the American Association of School Administrators

The reception will be held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 4, at Joplin Schools Administration Building, 3901 E. 32nd St. The public is invited to this come-and-go event. Refreshments will be served.

Huff was recognized as one of four finalists at the annual AASA National Conference on Education on Feb. 21 for his work tackling lackluster student performance and graduation rates and low levels of community engagement in the school system.

Through the Bright Futures initiative at Joplin Schools, the district has established 280 partnerships with businesses, faith-based organizations, community agencies, and parent groups to help meet student needs and allow students and teachers to focus on academic achievement and graduation.

The program has become a model for communities across Missouri and now serves nearly 50,000 children.

This year's Superintendent of the Year, Mark A. Edwards, superintendent of Moorsville, N.C., also was  announced at the conference.
