Two neighboring communities are a step closer to being added to Joplin’s wastewater treatment system.
Measures authorizing an agreement to treat wastewater for Duquesne and a contract to extend a sewer line to Silver Creek were approved Monday night by the Joplin City Council.
Joplin since 2003 has had an agreement to provide some sewage treatment in Duquesne. The measure approved Monday revises the pact as Duquesne approaches completion of its sewer system.
The ordinance sets standards to cover connections and discharges into the system, and a payment schedule and requirements for billing to be handled by Missouri American Water Co.
The council also approved a contract with Kenny Singer Construction Co. to extend an interceptor sewer line into Silver Creek.
Village officials last May proposed a cost-sharing agreement for the line, and in November the Joplin council approved a sewer agreement with the village.
Joplin will share the costs of extending the interceptor line and will be responsible for payment of one-fourth of the construction costs. Joplin also will pay the design and construction administration costs associated with the project. Silver Creek will be responsible for 75 percent of the construction costs.
The council also awarded a contract to Newman Brothers Construction Inc. for the next phase of work to widen Connecticut Avenue. The company’s bid of $555,411 to widen the street from three to five lanes between 24th and 26th streets was accepted.
In other business, the council OK’d:
n An amended agreement between the city and the Harry S. Truman Community Development Corp. for management of a Neighborhood Stabilization Program funded by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. Joplin last year was approved for a grant of more than $668,000 for home ownership assistance on foreclosed homes in low-income parts of the city. The measure expands the scope of services in the grant and allows an allocation of $99,500 to go to Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity.
n Condemnation proceedings to acquire a tract of land at the northeast corner of 20th and Main streets for intersection work.
n A $4,705 contract with Wheeler Excavating to demolish buildings and clear property at 1210 S. Moffet Ave., and at 603 and 605 Junge Blvd.
n A $4,700 contract with B&D; Yard Builders for building demolition and lot clearing at 1318 and 1322 E. Third St.
n A $39,450 contract with Tri-State Engineering for professional surveying services for a project to upgrade Schifferdecker Avenue from Seventh Street to 32nd Street.
n Rezoning property at 6902 E. 32nd St. from single-family residential to commercial.
Annexation measures
The Joplin City Council on Monday approved voluntary annexation of a portion of Central City Road from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway tracks to 32nd Street; a portion of Newton Road west of the intersection of 32nd Street and Central City Road; and parts of John Duffy Drive in the Wildwood Cottages subdivision.
