State MLK commission names Joplin mayor for leadership award

JOPLIN, Mo. — Joplin's mayor Melodee Colbert-Kean has been named the recipient of this year's leadership award by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. State Celebration Commission.

The award will be presented Saturday in recognition of her work, which the celebration commission said exemplifies the ideals of King.

A program including the awards presentation will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the main auditorium at Harris-Stowe State University. The keynote speaker for the program will be Xernona Clayton, president and chief executive officer of the Trumpet Awards Foundation. The program will be followed by a reception at which the Danita Mumphard band will perform.
