Seven-year-old Padawan soared through the skies to the delight of people who came to lend their financial support to the Wildcat Glades Conservation & Audubon Center in Wildcat Park in Joplin.
Rusty Scarburough, of White Hall, Ark., brought Padawan, a golden eagle, to perform for the 60 people who registered for the fundraiser.
Scarburough said falconry is about 4,000 years old and once was used by people to gather food.
“It’s part of our heritage, and a way to put food on our table before we got firearms,” he said.
Scarburough also brought another bird of prey, a Harris hawk, but a weight issue kept it from flying.
The center opened in 2007, but has been soliciting funds for the past six years via the annual event.
The center is known for its innovative “green” technologies.
Director Robin McAlester said the center is important to the area because of the educational opportunities available for children and adults.
About 60 people registered for this year’s event, she said.
As attendees mingled outside among many tents where various food items were being served, including sushi and fruit kabobs, others watched the bird demonstration, and listened to the sounds of Gary Reed of Joplin and his handmade wood flutes.
Reed said he makes his flutes from various types of wood, including cedar, boxwood and walnut.
“The cedar is a soft wood and has a more mellow sound,” he said.
The event also offered a silent auction featuring a rain barrel and gift certificate from a nursery garden, bird seed and handcrafted jewelry.
Denise Lambert, of Joplin, said she attended the event to support the nature center.
“It’s a wonderful thing for the community,” she said.
Lambert said she walks the trails every week, and is supportive of the center for the opportunities it presents to pass the love of nature to children.
