Church, area officials honor Joplin mayor

Joplin Mayor Gary Shaw was honored Sunday at Central Christian Center for his 30 years of dedication to the church and the community.

Several hundred people attended the event, which was kept a secret from Shaw until Sunday morning.

Speakers read resolutions from the city of Joplin, the Missouri Senate, the Missouri House and the church, as well as letters from U.S. Rep. Roy Blunt and U.S. Sen. Kit Bond.

The Rev. Hank Deslatte acknowledged Shaw’s 30 years of service to the church as executive administrator, as well as his service to the city.

“Don’t get the idea, Gary, that you’re done,” Deslatte said. “There’s still lots to do.”

Some city employees and council members attended the ceremony.

“I just thought it would be good to give him some flowers while he’s still able to smell them,” Deslatte said to laughs from church members.

City Manager Mark Rohr acknowledged Shaw as a friend and colleague.

“Gary carries the dual responsibility with the church and the city,” Rohr said. “He never complains, and he always picks me up when I’m down.”

Rohr referred to Shaw as a caring and compassionate man who sees the positive in everything.

Mayor Pro Tem Mike Woolston proclaimed Sunday “Gary Shaw Day” in Joplin, and praised Shaw for his seven years on the City Council, his service as mayor and his board membership in the Missouri Municipal League.

State Sen. Gary Nodler, of Joplin, read the proclamation from the state Senate.

“Actually, Gary, I think you’re one of the best mayors we’ve ever had,” Nodler said.

Deslatte recalled his experience touring with Revival Fires, which visited more than 30 countries. Shaw spent many years working for the ministry as manager.

“I told Pastor Mack (Evans), ‘We need Gary down here,’” Deslatte said.

Evans is a former pastor of Central Christian Center.

“We realize no man is a success; it takes a strong support group,” Evans said.

Evans repeatedly referred to Shaw as an “honorable man.”

“To honor an honorable man is an honor,” Evans said. “I honor you today, sir, and I honor your dedication.”





‘Fun trip’

At the conclusion of the 45-minute appreciation service, an emotional Gary Shaw gave credit to the staff.

He also had church members laughing when he said: “Billy Graham once said, ‘It has been a fun trip, and it’s kind of neat that you can be at your own funeral.’”
