Joplin Schools holds annual back-to-school rally for faculty

JOPLIN, Mo. — Joplin Schools formally welcomed back teachers and staff members today with its annual back-to-school rally, held this year at College Heights Christian Church.

Chris Young, a French teacher at Joplin High School, said he looks forward to the rally each fall.

"This is one of those motivators for faculty," he said. "They (the students) are coming whether you're ready or not, so this kind of gets you in that mindset."

The rally included a number of guest speakers, including Kristi McGowen, a high school business teacher and the district's 2013 Teacher of the Year; Taryn Parker, a high school senior; Assistant Superintendent Angie Besendorfer; Randy Gariss, minister of College Heights; and Superintendent C.J. Huff.

"Your community believes in you; your Board of Education believes in you; I believe in you," Huff told the about 1,300 teachers and staff members who were at the rally. "The kids arrive in less than 48 hours. It's our time; let's get to work."

The first day of school for Joplin students is Thursday.

A Missouri Senate committee has endorsed a 1-cent sales tax increase to fund transportation projects. The proposed constitutional amendment passed the House earlier this month. If passed by the full Senate, the measure would head to the November ballot for voter approval. Would you vote in favor of it?
