History Day winners advance

Dozens of students from across the region took top honors Friday in the National History Day competition at Missouri Southern State University.

“Innovation in History: Impact and Change” was this year’s theme.

Winners from the regional contest advanced to the Missouri State History Day competition April 10. Winners at the state competition could go on to the National History Day contest in June at College Park, Md.

Students competed in two divisions. In the junior division, which includes grades 6-8, the winners by category:

Paper, first place, Kelsey Frost, Carthage Junior High School, “Innovations and Impact of the Qwerty Keyboard;” second place, Cherith Parnell, Carthage Junior High School, “Innovations of Robotics in the Workplace.”

Individual exhibit, first place, Samantha Stout, South Middle School, “Anesthesia: The Blessed Sleep;” second place, Schooley Jacob, Appleton City, “M-1 Garand;” third place, Eric Peer, home school, Carthage, “Hoisting Joplin to Fame: The Freeman Hoist.’’

Group exhibit, first place, Carter Hickman and Chris Paullus, Neosho Middle School, “Winds of Change;” second place, Thisbe Scholfield-Johnson and Adelle Kanan, Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School, “Frankenfood: Will It Save or Destroy Our Planet?;” third place, Audrey McIlvaine, Danielle Tillman and Madison Siguenza, Neosho Middle School, “Barbie: A Girl’s Inspiration for Imagination.’’
