Gorillas roll over Panhandle State

PITTSBURG, Kan. - After this past season's 70-point victory against Panhandle State, the Pittsburg State Gorillas knew they may not have much trouble against those same Aggies this year. However, they may not have expected it to be this easy.

The No. 7 ranked Gorillas piled on the points the entire game Saturday night and routed the Aggies 87-0 at Carnie Smith Stadium. The margin of victory is the second-highest all-time in school history.

PSU head coach Chuck Broyles rested his starters throughout the second half after the Gorillas built a 49-0 halftime lead.

Sophomore quarterback Mark Smith completed 12-of-15 passes for 183 yards and four touchdowns. Smith threw touchdown passes of 12, 11, 23 and 15 yards.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Geno Waters hit 5-of-8 passes for 115 yards and a score.

Senior running back Germaine Race rushed 15 times for 110 yards and three touchdowns.

The all-time school leader in rushing touchdowns ran for scores of 14, two and one yards, all in the first half.

The Gorillas racked up 718 yards - 396 rushing, 322 passing - of total offense on 68 plays while the PSU defense held the Aggies to just 60 yards on 51 plays.

"We worked real hard this week because we didn't think we played very well (last week) on the offensive side of the ball," Smith said. "We had to get ready for the big games coming up.

"We weren't overlooking (the Aggies), but we knew we were better than them. We played well and we beat them and now we get ready for Missouri Western next week."

Pitt (2-0) will travel to St. Joseph next Saturday to square off against the Missouri Western Griffons.

The Gorillas' offensive output ties for fourth-highest in a game in PSU history.

Steven Boone led the Aggies in rushing with 21 yards on 11 carries. Quarterback Craig Maynard threw for 29 yards, connecting on 4-of-7 passes.

After scoring just twice in the first quarter, both on Race runs, the Gorillas exploded for five touchdowns in the second quarter. Smith hit Derek Ryan for a 12-yard score, then connected with Eric Clawson for an 11-yard score.

The Pittsburg native then connected with Bryan Pray for a 23-yard touchdown pass. Another Race touchdown from one yard out was followed by a 15-yard scoring strike from Smith to Marques Nelson.

The Gorillas added four scores in the third quarter and one touchdown in the fourth. The scoring was capped by a 30-yard field goal by Nathan Alleman.

Smith, making his first start in front a home crowd, said the Gorillas wanted to make sure they stated sharp throughout the game.
