Who will see president?

U.S. Sen. Jim Talent, who stood alongside the Senate majority leader for a campaign event on Tuesday, will be back in the area Friday for a campaign stop with President Bush.

Tickets for the president's appearance at Missouri Southern State University were being distributed Tuesday at the close of a rally for Talent at Republican campaign headquarters in Joplin.

Friday's event, billed as a "Missouri Victory Rally," is scheduled for noon at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. The White House on Tuesday confirmed that Bush would speak at the rally.

About 4,100 tickets had been given away Tuesday, with about 1,400 more still available, according to Allen Shirley, Jasper-Newton county coordinator for the Talent campaign.

The distribution center for the tickets is at Granny Shaffer's Restaurant, 2728 N. Range Line Road. It will open at 11 a.m. today and remain in operation until 7 p.m. or until all the tickets are handed out.

Shirley said those who want a ticket should use an entrance on the back side of the restaurant, to gain access to a room that has been dedicated to ticket disbursement.

"There's been a huge amount of interest," said Shirley, who also is a member of the Newton County Republican Central Committee. "There's a good chance we'll pack the place."

Shirley said those requesting tickets will be asked to show a driver's license or other personal photo identification, for security purposes, and to provide their address and telephone number.

"When they get their ticket, it will have their name on the back, and they'll have to have the ticket and a picture ID to get in," he said.

Officials at MSSU are working with the Secret Service on plans for the visit, said Ken Kennedy, head of security for the university.

Despite the local planning, Talent on Tuesday would not answer questions about the president's visit, saying he could not discuss it until travel plans were officially announced by the White House. That announcement came later.

Last Bush visit

The last time President Bush was in Joplin was as a presidential candidate, during a campaign rally in 2000.
