Southwest motifs featured in exhibit's photos

CARTHAGE, Mo. — The photography of Carthage artist Koral Martin will be featured in an exhibit that opens today at artCentral's Hyde House Gallery. A reception will be held at 6 p.m. today.

"Westward Wanderings" features photos taken in the southwest portion of the U.S.

Taking the photos involved two weeks of hikes and camps across deserts, canyons and mountains.

Such treks don't bother Martin in the least Ñ she actually enjoys taking her time, taking hours to walk a short distance. Over the course of a two-week trip to the Southwest last June, she took two cameras, six lenses and a lot of filters.

"We hit four big national parks in two solid weeks of traveling and camping," Martin said. "I'm still going through pictures."

Martin said she was drawn to nature because of an innate beauty found in its order and chaos. She tries to find views that a casual observer may miss, she said.

"I use a lot of unique viewpoints," she said. "I also try to bring in textures a lot. The country out there is full of wonderful colors and textures."

Martin also owns the Koka Art Gallery in Carthage. Her work includes floral photography and infrared photography.
