Competitors to get colored in Paint Wars

JOPLIN, Mo. — Local charity Art Feeds will host a full-scale paint war at 8 a.m. Saturday at The Bridge.

“Paint Wars is basically a mix between dodgeball, capture the flag, and the Color Run,” said Meg Bourne, founder of Art Feeds. “So, instead of dodgeballs, we have what we call ‘paint bombs,’ which are tissue paper bombs with powder paint on the inside of them.”

The object of each event is to spatter the opposing team with as much color as possible. Combat tactics will draw from the school of Jackson Pollock rather than General Patton.

“At Art Feeds we always joked that if you are a part of Art Feeds there will be paint on your clothes no matter what,” Bourne said. “So we kind of cooked up this idea because we loved the Color Run and we love dodgeball, so we fused the two together to take having paint on your clothes to the next level.”

Bourne said the event marks the first of its kind that Art Feeds has hosted. It is planned that Paint Wars will become an annual event.

“We have about 16 teams entered so far,” Bourne said. “We have some last minute ones trickling in as well.”

Registered teams include employees from local area businesses such as McCallister’s, Moe’s, and Chick-fil-A. Several college and high-school groups are set to participate as well, including two teams of students from Joplin High School and a team comprised of Joplin High School teachers.

“You get covered in powdered paint from head to toe, you can get some aggression out, you can also win a sweet trophy,” said Marissa Fahrig, CFO for Art Feeds, “and it’s all for a good cause. All the money from Paint Wars goes right back to our programs which go right back to students in Joplin.”
