Local performance group to make 'Rocky Horror' regular

WEBB CITY, Mo. — A local performance is prepared to do the Time Warp again. And again.

"We have 10 people in our cast, and all of them are local, die-hard fans of 'Rocky,'" said Aly Presser, director of RKO Floor Show. "It blows my mind how passionate they are."

The group will start the first of its regular re-enactments of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" Saturday at Route 66 Movie Theater. As the movie plays on the screen, character actors will also portray every scene in costume -- not just selected scenes. It's similar to showings portrayed in "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," she said.

Presser said her cast includes theater students from MSSU and Crowder College. After February's show, they will perform shows every third Saturday.

Joplin Little Theatre recently performed "The Rocky Horror Show" to sold-out crowds. The 1973 stage play inspired the 1975 movie starring Tim Curry and Susan Sarandon. It became a cult classic: Three years after its debut, moviegoers started arriving in costume and talking back to the screen in response.

Presser first saw the movie with her dad when she was 15 and has been hooked ever since. While living in Ohio, she was a member of a similar performing group.

"I just loved the energy you get," Presser said. "I've always been a fan of theater, but 'Rocky' has been a huge part of my upbringing. I went from watching it with my dad the first time to performing it."

The production will have some local touches. Presser said some of the talkback lines will be localized. But other traditions, from the dance numbers to the things thrown at the performers, will remain the same, she said.
