Ensemble Schumann to perform next week

JOPLIN, Mo. — The next concert hosted by Pro Musica Joplin will include two ensembles, one of which features a performer who used to teach in Joplin.

Ensemble Schumann, featuring oboe player Thomas Gallant, violist Steve Larson and pianist Sally Pinkas, will perform Thursday at South Middle School.

The ensemble's program features Mozart, Saint-Saens, Loeffler and the composer who inspired the ensemble's name: Robert Schumann.

As individuals, members of the ensemble have performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York City, London's Wigmore Hall and the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. Together they have been featured on WGBH in Boston and as part of the Da Camera Series in Los Angeles.

The ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. Before the concert, the Lee's Summit Brass Quintet will perform at 6:30 in the school's commons area outside the auditorium.

The quintet includes trumpeter John Parcell, who taught in Joplin schools from 1981 to 1988.

The concert is sponsored by Curtain Up and the Missouri Arts Council.
