Pro Musica Joplin announces lineup for upcoming season

JOPLIN, Mo. — The 32nd season of Pro Musica Joplin will feature a host of string players, including three string quartets, and a unique pairing of oboe, piano and viola.

Interim director Bonnie Yetter announced the lineup for the season last week. Working as a replacement for outgoing director Kelli Clevenger since April, Yetter said the board could begin a search for a new director sometime next year. The featured performers include:

  • Ariel Quartet, Sept. 20. Comprised of violinists Alexandra Kasovsky and Gershon Gerchikov, violist Jan Gruning and cellist Amit Even-Tov, the Israel-based quartet will perform a program of classics from Mozart, Korngold and Beethoven.

The quartet is currently in residence at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
  • Cellist Matt Haimovitz, Nov. 1 and 2. The cellist will perform two concerts; one at First United Methodist Church and another at Phoenix Fired Arts.

In addition to a career that has taken him to Carnegie Hall, Haimovitz also runs a cellist school at McGill University in Montreal.
  • Turtle Island Quartet, Dec. 6. The string quartet, featuring violinists David Balakrishnan and Mads Tolling, violist Jeremy Kittel and cellist Mark Summer, has been together since 1985.

The quartet will perform a holiday program of music from around the world, including India’s Diwali, old English carols and selections by Vince Guaraldi from “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”
  • Pacifica Quartet, Feb. 7. Comprised of violinists Simin Gantara and Sibbi Bernhardsson, violist Masumi Per Rostad and cellist Brandon Vamos, the string quartet will present a unique program of Bartok, Boccherini and Ravel.
  • Manasse Nakamatsu Duo, March 7. Clarinetist Jon Manasse and pianist Jon Nakamatsu will present a program including Brahms, Liebermann and Poulenc.
  • Ensemble Schumann, April 11. The trio includes a unique grouping of oboe, viola and piano, played by Thomas Gallant, Steve Larson and Sally Pinkas, respectively.

The artists for Pro Musica’s annual Joplin Pops concert will be announced later.
