Heartfelt fun: Decorative candleholder a fun family project for Valentine's Day

JOPLIN, Mo. — If you're looking for a fun, Valentine's Day-themed craft project for the kids, look no further than Pinterest. The online content-sharing service offers a wealth of "craft projects, recipes and DIY projects, and not just girly ones," says Karalee McDonald, education coordinator at Spiva Center for the Arts.

McDonald recently shared a project she found on Pinterest for a decorative candleholder.

"This is a great project (that can be adapted) for any holiday," she said. "If you print a picture of your family on vellum, you can glue that on as well."

What you'll need

A glass jar or candleholder

Tissue paper

Liquid starch

Step 1: Put down newspaper or other protective covering to work on.

Step 2: Cut out squares of tissue paper and then some hearts. McDonald recommends doing this part early because "later on, when your fingers are sticky, it's a lot more challenging."

Step 3: Dip the paper squares in the liquid starch and cover the glass jar with them.

"Press them down so it's nice and smooth, and put a little (of the liquid starch) on the outside, too. If you've ever done decoupage, it's the same technique," she said. "Keep going around the jar until it's all filled in. It goes pretty fast once you get going."

Step 4: Apply as many of the paper heart shapes as you want on the jar. You can tie ribbon around the neck of the jar to give it some additional flair, said McDonald.

Step 5: Let the jar dry overnight, or use a hair dryer to speed up the process.
