JOPLIN, Mo. —
Jasmin Boothe, age 6, was diagnosed with leukemia in November 2012. Shortly after, her mother, Heidi Boothe, lost her job.
Heidi's best friend, Sara Goodwin, was not content to sit by as the Boothe family suffered.
"Heidi's having a pretty rough time," Goodwin said. "She's trying to be very strong for her daughter. Jasmin's had a lot of complications. She's got her hands full."
Goodwin quickly got to work and picked up the phone in an attempt to organize a benefit for Jasmin.
Bringing together live music, a silent auction and raffle drawings, Goodwin organized the Jammin' for Jasmin benefit concert, set for 5 to 11 p.m. Sunday at JB's Piano Bar.
"(Jasmin is) really excited," Goodwin said. "She's had a couple of benefits up in Kansas City for her. She was obviously very taken back by it. She sends me messages all the time that I'm amazing. And I was like, ÔI'm not amazing, I'm just a good friend.' I think she would do the same thing for me."
The concert will feature performances by local artists including 2 Steps Back, Conway Jackson, Bradleys, One Night Stand and Missouri Coalition.
"Most of the bands just hopped right on," Goodwin said. "I had an overwhelming response from bands actually. I only have six hours, and I didn't want the majority of it running three minutes before breaking down and setting up again."
The benefit will also feature a photo booth provided by Say Cheez, an organization owned by a family whose 33-year-old son is also battling cancer. The booth is provided free of charge, though participants are encouraged to leave donations.
Goodwin said Jasmin may be in attendance, but a string of further medical complications may prevent her from going.
