Teachers championed in play at Stone's Throw

CARTHAGE, Mo. — A play presented at Stone's Throw Dinner Theatre pays tribute to terrific teachers.

"Up the Down Staircase" is an adaptation of the book by Bel Kaufman. Directed by Tom Brown and Dee Hubbard, it tells the story of an idealistic teacher who clashes with school bureaucracy while trying to educate students. The story is told through letters, memos, directives, student comments, and papers from desks and trash cans.

The cast includes Hannah Marsh Cunningham, Robert Myers, Clint Dodson, Joe Kowalski, Stefani Atnip, Dexter Putnam, Betsy Fleischaker, Linda Craig, Wendy Wolf, Melody Salzer, Toni Diggs, Christian Stewart, Garrett Dunn, Drake Huckster, Molly Hurley, Noel Green, Lasha Dohle, Dakota Moore, Olivia Donnel, Tabitha Mather, Julia Oney, Cassie York, Ivy Kephart, Jalil Hamilton, Jelica Montelongo, Pamle Slagle and Eden Mather.

The play runs from Jan. 31 to Feb. 9. Showtimes are 7:30 on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Doors open 90 minutes before showtime, and dinner is served an hour before showtime.

Tickets: $24.50, $21 for seniors and students and $12 for children.
