Kickoff features debut of Joplin bow tie

JOPLIN, Mo. — A bow tie designed by a local artist will be unveiled during a special kickoff Saturday. Then, an NFL linebacker will teach everyone how to tie it.

Dhani Jones, founder of Bowtie Cause, will be part of Rock a Joplin BowTie, a launch party at Spiva Center for the Arts. Sales of the ties will benefit Spiva and Rebuild Joplin.

Jo Mueller, director of the center, said people are already knotted over their ties.

"People who have already ordered the ties are already calling," Mueller said. "They can't wait to get them. It's a very colorful tie, different from anything else Bowtie Cause has done."

Jones' foundation works with charities by producing five-ply silk ties with designs inspired by the charity the tie will benefit. Joplin's case was a little different, however -- it was the first time the organization used a design from community members.

Earlier this year Spiva held a contest, where more than 200 people entered designs. Five finalists from that pool were submitted to the foundation, which then selected Margie Moss' design.

Her entry features graphic-design style art similar to her en plein air paintings, and includes depictions of construction tools, scissors and a red ribbon, buildings, plants, a butterfly, crosses and the words "Love," "Joplin" and "Hope."

Ties will be available for $57 -- Jones' NFL jersey number -- at the event and at
