Dance party pairs electronic music with sci-fi costumes

JOPLIN, Mo. — Christofer Drew might be involved with a Saturday night dance party, but it’s definitely not a Never Shout Never show.

Lovedaze is a sci-fi themed dance party and costume contest that features a costume contest, a high-tech laser show and a love of sci-fi culture.

“The dance scene has taken itself too seriously,” said Ben Bauder, co-organizer of the event with Drew. “We wanted to hold an event with a light-hearted vibe directed at the college crowd.”

Lovedaze is an 18-and-older event produced by Lovejoy Records, Drew’s label. The event will feature Gonzo, an electronic music act fronted by Bauder and Drew, and include performances from AC-130 and NPR.

The highlight will be a sci-fi costume contest. If the event sells out, then only people wearing costumes will be allowed in, Bauder said.

The idea came from wanting to do something dramatically different, he said. He helped organize an annual zombie march in downtown Joplin.

“This is a high production show,” Bauder said. “It’s over the top for this area. We wanted to bring a new vibe, something that people have never imagined coming to Joplin.”

Bauder and Drew will release their first album as Gonzo on March 6.

Lovedaze will be held from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. at Scottish Rite Cathedral, located at 505 S. Byers Ave. The alcohol-free event is for people 18 and older.
