JOPLIN, Mo. —
On the day before Cinco de Mayo, sci-fi fans will celebrate the birth of a beloved story.
Not that "Star Wars" made its debut on May 4. The date is known as Star Wars Day because of the date's similar sound to one of its most legendary lines: "May the force be with you."
Ganesha Theatre, located at 2331 E. Seventh St., will celebrate the day with a special concert that night. Participants who dress up like characters from the movie will get in for half price. Movies from the original trilogy will also be shown on the venue's wall.
The movies will be paired with reggae and funk music, said venue manager Ben Bauder. Preston Hall and DF Dub All Stars, a reggae band out of Dallas, Texas, will perform in concert. Other acts featured are Totojojo and Third Party.
"The only reason for this is because I'm a huge 'Star Wars' nerd," Bauder said. "We've actually had (Hall) booked for a couple of months. But when we saw it was May the Fourth, we had to do something with 'Star Wars.'"
This is the first Joplin performance for Hall, who has played in Springfield. Bauder said he's hoping that one of the acts plays some sort of "Star Wars" music, but has a backup plan, just in case.
"I've been searcing for reggae 'Star Wars' cover songs," Bauder said. "There's bound to be some out there."
Admission: $10, $5 for people dressed in costume.
