Farm Girl Fest to hold spring event at school

SARCOXIE, Mo. — A group that re-creates historic farm life at Red Oak II in Carthage will take their event to school this weekend.

Farm Girl Fest, which is usually held in fall, will offer a spring event Saturday at Cave Spring School near Sarcoxie. The event will feature a Civil War re-enactment, vendors, a hay ride, petting zoo, demonstrations, live music, storytelling and more.

"I think we'll have a pretty good turnout," said Caitlynn Morris, organizer of the event. "People know what the Cave Spring School is, and there are some people at my church who went there a long time ago. They are excited about it."

During the event members of the school's board will give tours of the recently renovated school and a nearby cemetery. The building was a garrison for federal militia during the Civil War and was a temporary county seat while the Jasper County Courthouse was rebuilt.

Morris said she was approached by the board for the event and looks forward to making it an annual affair.

"I told them that when we started our festival, it started out rough, but now it has taken off," Morris said. "We're hoping people will hear about it and get more in next year."

Morris said she and her sister started Farm Girl Fest about six years ago as a surprise for their mother. Transplants from California, the family moved to Carthage, and then to the outskirts, where they grew to appreciate the quiet and simplicity of life in the country.
