Spiva exhibit features new directions for artists

JOPLIN, Mo. — Two local artists will share the main gallery at Spiva Center for the Arts.

"The Essence of Unrelenting Elements" is a collaborative exhibit by Jorge Leyva and Brent Skinner. Featuring Leyva's mixed media sculpture and Skinner's clay, the exhibit provides a study in contrasts of new artistic directions, according to a press release from Spiva.

Leyva earned his stripes as a painter who applied architectural form to nature and the environment, according to the report. Now, the Joplin artist is working more with sculpture in wood, stone and steel.

Likewise, Skinner earned a reputation for pieces with a controlled design, but his latest works feature much more inspiration from emotion, according to the report.

The exhibit will be on display until Sept. 8. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is by contribution.

Details: 417-623-0183.
