JOPLIN, Mo. — Registration continues for children's summer workshops at Joplin Little Theatre, where students will learn about the magic of dramatic arts -- and get some advance work on audition opportunities for shows later in the season.

"This year we plan to focus some real time on auditioning techniques," said Lisa Wood, director of the workshop, in an e-mail. "(The theater) will be offering two shows this season with opportunities for younger actors and actresses, so learning how to audition will be important."

The workshop, themed around "Dragon Troubles," will teach theater techniques from acting to set-building, from dancing to lights. Students will build everything from castles to caves, and learn costumes and makeup for fairies and magicians.

Wood said all aspects of production will be covered.

Class perfect for beginners

"First-time students will be able to see all of a production on a beginners level with general knowledge," Wood said. "Our returning friends will be given a refresher course, then move into some more advanced challenges."

The camps will be led by experts affiliated with the theater and other youth staff members. Guest teachers will include directors from across the area.

Sessions will be held June 10-14, June 17-21 and July 15-17. Sessions will be held 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. daily.

Cost: $55 per session per child. More information and registration is available at
