Corvette owners kickin’ it on Route 66

JOPLIN, Mo. — Some bright and shiny Corvettes, including some from the 1950s, will motor into Joplin this weekend for “Vettes in the Midwest III.’’

The fundraising event for Ozarks Public Television and 4 State Vettes, the host club, will feature a block party Friday night on Main Street in which the public can view the cars.

“We’ll have close to 100 Vettes and you can look at them for free Friday night on Main Street or on Saturday at the Holiday Inn Convention Center,’’ said Becky Scott, with Ozark Public Television in Joplin.

The vehicles will cruise from the convention center to downtown Joplin at 4:30 p.m. Friday. They will be on display from 5 to 7:15 p.m. Main Street is being blocked off for the event. From there, the cars will cruise Old Route 66 to the Route 66 Drive-In at Carthage.

On Saturday, the Corvettes will be lined up inside of the convention center for a car show that is free and open to the public. The show will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cars will be judged in several categories.

From 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, the Corvette owners will be able to choose from two cruises. One of them will be to a restored service station at Halltown, east of Carthage. The others cruise will be to the Coleman Theatre at Miami, Okla.

This year’s event features some new elements for the Corvette owners who are traveling to Joplin. A bowling tournament will be held Friday. A poker run and gold tournament are scheduled for Saturday.

“Corvette Weekend’’ will conclude Saturday with a banquet and awards ceremony. Approximately $1,500 in prize money will be given away along with several door prizes for participants.

More than 20 Corvette clubs from across the Midwest will have members participating in the show.
