Rock bands excited for return to Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. — Rock bands Wayland and Another Lost Year are scheduled to perform at 8 p.m. on Monday at Shenanigan’s, located at 520 S. Joplin.

Wayland, named after the band members’ hometown in Michigan, represents the hard-working people of small towns across America, said Mitch Arnold, lead singer for Wayland.

“We are blue-collar, American rock ’n’ rollers,” said Arnold. “It’s a four-piece rock ’n’ roll band that plays hard-hitting, melodic, blues-based rock ’n’ roll.”

Another Lost Year, which was named North Carolina Rock Band of the Year in 2011, brings additional traditional hard-rock sound, coupled with emotionally charged lyrics.

“We’re as heavy as you want us to be, light as you want us to be,” said Clinton Cunanan, lead vocalist for Another Lost Year. “We’re just rock music in general, but most of all we’re music of hope. If you’ve ever had some hard times, some down times, I think you’ll be able to relate to our music.”

Hang ’Em High Tour

Wayland and Another Lost Year are visiting Joplin as part of their national Hang ’Em High tour, which began earlier this year.

“We’ve been on the road now since Jan. 5 of this year,” Arnold said. “It’s been absolutely amazing. It’s kind of like blazing a trail through the forest, being an up-and-coming band like this. Some areas, you’re going to be familiar with. Some areas, they’re going to be familiar with you. Others are uncharted territory, and you’re running for your life every day.”

Joplin Connection

Despite the struggle of being on tour in unfamiliar locations, both Wayland and Another Lost Year are familiar with the Joplin area.

“Joplin is great,” said Arnold. “We’ve got a great fan base in Joplin. Whether it’s a Friday night or a Tuesday night, people always come out to support us.”

“The fans, the people that we met in Joplin, were crazy,” Cunanan said. “They had never heard of us, and they just went wild. I would say Joplin was the start of what we saw coming once we started to get some radio help. Joplin has definitely been on our list to get back to.”

The Hang ’Em High tour marks the second time that Another Lost Year has traveled with Wayland. Being on tour gave Another Lost Year’s members an opportunity to meet some of their own musical idols, said Cunanan.
