9:14 a.m. Area communities, counties receive law enforcement grants

Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt has announced that more than $1 million dollars has been awarded to local law enforcement agencies through the federal Local Law Enforcement Block Grant/JAG program.

“Our public safety agencies must have the resources they need to save lives and we will continue to aggressively seek out federal funds to help make our neighborhoods as safe as possible,” Blunt said in a statement. “These grants will make a big difference in fighting crime resulting in safer communities for Missourians.”

The Local Law Enforcement Block Grants were awarded to 160 law enforcement agencies to help reduce crime and improve public safety. Missouri was able to secure $1,015,373 that will be used to purchase officer safety equipment such as radios, ballistic vests, handcuffs, lightbars and other items.

The Local Law Enforcement Block Grant/JAG Program is administered by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance. Missouri is awarded funding through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program.
