Man faces trial in car crash involving race

A Joplin man waived his right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Jasper County Circuit Court on two counts of felony assault related to a motor-vehicle accident in August and was ordered bound over for trial.

David F. Gillespie, 62, 324 W. 45th St., was ordered by Associate Judge Richard Copeland to make an initial appearance in a trial division of the court on Monday.

Gillespie is facing two counts of second-degree assault in connection with a two-vehicle accident Aug. 23 on Highway 171, east of Carterville. A probable-cause affidavit filed by a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper states that Gillespie was racing a Ford Mustang with his Porsche at a high rate of speed and struck the rear of a Dodge Durango driven by Bradley J. Schrader, 33, of Carthage.

Schrader lost control of his vehicle, and it skidded off the road into a guardrail and overturned, according to the affidavit. His wife, Valisa A. Schrader, 28, and their children, Alexander Schrader, 8, and Alexandria Schrader, 7, were injured, with one of the children’s injuries listed as serious and the wife’s injuries as moderate.

Gillespie’s Porsche skidded off the side of the road, and the Mustang left the scene.

The affidavit states that the trooper could smell alcohol on Gillespie’s breath, and his blood-alcohol content allegedly tested at 0.158 percent.
