FAIRVIEW, Mo. — Carbon-monoxide poisoning from a propane heater is suspected in a Fairview woman’s death and the hospitalization of four of her family members, the Newton County coroner said on Wednesday.
Coroner Mark Bridges said Ruby Jewell Wells, 72, died in her home at 116 Reese St. in Fairview during the early morning hours on Sunday. Her husband, Bobbie Wells, and three other family members were taken to Joplin hospitals, suffering from apparent carbon-monoxide poisoning.
Bridges said the family had a propane heater rigged up in the house and also had been cooking on a camp stove inside the residence during an electrical outage caused by this weekend’s ice storm.
