2:04 p.m. Kansas schools to lose thousands under proposed cuts

PITTSBURG, Kan. — For weeks, Kansas school administrators have prepared themselves for the worst-case scenario when it comes to possible cuts to this year’s state education budget and projected cuts to next year’s allocation.

Recently, their fears were realized as the House and Senate approved a bill that reduces base state aid for the current school year by $66 per pupil, and trims special education aid by 2 percent.

The bill has gone to Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, who had recommended $22 in cuts per pupil.

All told, the state’s 295 districts stand to lose almost $28 million in base state aid and $4 million in aid to special education; the Legislature hopes that cut will help offset the state deficit of $199 million for the fiscal year ending June 30.

Here’s how much area districts will lose under the proposal:

Baxter Springs: $110,257

Cherokee: $93,742

Columbus: $137,287

Frontenac: $92,486

Galena: $92,621

Girard: $118,699

Northeast: $76,764

Pittsburg: $290,456

Riverton: $101,783
