2:19 p.m. Miami sets public meeting for downtown development plans
MIAMI, Okla. — City officials will hold a public meeting at 1 p.m. Friday in the Miami Civic Center located at 129 5th Avenue. The meeting will be a forum for downtown business and property owners and other members of the Miami community to review and comment on revitalization plans for downtown Miami.
The meeting will commence with a presentation by graduate students from the University of Oklahoma’s Division of Landscape Architecture. The main areas of focus include existing downtown parking lots and the proposed pocket park adjacent to and immediately north of the Coleman Theatre.
The students and their professor will present precedents that have worked in other communities in Oklahoma and across the nation. Public input will be used to develop final design concepts for presentation at a future downtown visioning meeting.
Jerry Ruse, city engineer, will follow with a presentation of plans for the revitalization of a three-phase Main Street project running from Steve Owens Boulevard to 4th Avenue North. Items to be covered include the type and placement of antique streetlights, landscaping and other aspects of the proposed $2 million project.
The presentation also will discuss plans to incorporate the Miami Gateway Sign, historic markers, and the Ozark Trail Milepost into the downtown revitalization project. The city was recently awarded a $120,000 grant from the National Scenic Byways Program to make these historic Route 66 enhancements.
