BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — The Baxter Springs City Council on Tuesday night took action to maintain and repair city buildings.

The council approved paying $2,150 to repair the roof at the old Community Building, at 506 W. Fourth St.

Councilman Ron Steele said after the roof is repaired, the building needs to be painted. He said a front awning also should be replaced or removed.

“There probably hasn’t been any money spent on that building in 30 years,” Mayor Huey York said.

“It’s been neglected for so many years,” said Councilman Ed McAfee.

The council also approved spending $3,415 on cabinets at the new cable television equipment building. Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse, Joplin, Mo., will supply the cabinets.

An alarm system for the building was approved at a cost of $1,030 plus a contract for $34 a month.

The council approved Tammy Edmondson to paint the swimming pool building for $1,500, with the city providing the primer and paint, and authorized a new fence for the pool at a cost of up to $5,000 from Reliable Fence Co., Grove, Okla.

Kelly Abbott will do concrete work at the pool in advance of opening at a cost of $2,516.

The council approved replacing the front doors at the police station at a cost of $3,085. Bill’s Glass, Galena, will do the work.

In other business Tuesday night, the council:

n Voted to advertise for bids to demolish a fire-damaged house at 937 Kansas Ave.

n Paid payroll and bills totaling $222,127.
