An anonymous tip helped Joplin police on Thursday morning apprehend a man who led officers on a 38-minute chase Tuesday afternoon through the city.
Sgt. John Wales of the Joplin Police Department said an anonymous caller let police know that Daniel R. Hylton, 23, was in a white sport utility vehicle Thursday morning.
Officers located the SUV eastbound on Interstate 44 with two men inside, but they did not attempt to stop it because of the level of traffic in the area, Wales said. Officers instead followed the vehicle as it pulled off I-44 at the Main Street exit and headed south.
With the help of some witnesses in the area, the officers located the vehicle a second time behind the Harley-Davidson dealership in the 5200 block of Hearnes Boulevard, Wales said. Hylton, who was a passenger, reportedly jumped out of the car and tried to hide.
Wales said Hylton was taken into custody without further incident at 9:33 a.m. He was not armed with any weapon, Wales said. The male driver of the vehicle was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of obstruction.
The Jasper County prosecutor’s office filed charges later in the day against Hylton. They were first-degree tampering with a vehicle and assault on a law-enforcement officer in connection with Tuesday’s chase. He is accused of driving a pickup truck that was stolen in Vinita, Okla., and almost striking an officer who was trying to put out stop sticks on 20th Street during the course of the chase.
Before his capture, Hylton was facing a charge of manufacturing a controlled substance in connection with an alleged methamphetamine lab discovered by Jasper County deputies one week ago in a room at the Tara Motel east of Duenweg. Authorities say Hylton escaped then out a bathroom window of the motel.
City charges against Hylton number three counts of failure to signal, three counts of failure to stop for a stop sign, three counts of improper lane change, and single counts of driving with a revoked license, careless driving, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, and expired plates.
Bonds
Daniel Hylton’s city and county warrants carry bonds totaling $7,250. But he has hold orders on him at the Joplin City Jail for a Jasper County probation violation and a Callaway County warrant for failure to appear in court on a charge of careless and imprudent driving.
