More than 100 turn out for teenager’s performance

Though she had heard violinist Tobiah Murphy play in church, Tasha Sims, of Joplin, had never been to one of his concerts before Sunday.

“I know the family well, and I’ve heard him play before,” Sims said moments before Murphy took the stage Sunday in Webster Auditorium at Missouri Southern State University. “I’m excited to hear him, and how his talent has progressed.”

Murphy, 17, played for more than 100 people to raise funds for a trip this summer to a prestigious music school. His selections included Paganini’s Caprice No. 13, Massenet’s Meditation from Thais and Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole.

The crowd included members of his church, friends and strangers, said LaVaine Murphy, the teen’s father.

“It’s not just friends here, it’s the community,” LaVaine Murphy said. “It’s exciting.”

Proceeds from the concert will go toward Murphy’s trip to study at the Meadowmount School of Music in Westport, N.Y.

Jill Wilkins, of Oronogo, said she knew what Murphy could do with a violin. Her children have played alongside Murphy in different venues, she said.

“I’ve known the family several years,” Wilkins said. “They are dedicated to music. Toby has such a serious mind about it.”

Given Blakely, of Joplin, said Murphy’s talents go past the violin.

“He’s also a good preacher,” Blakely said. “He’s devoted to music and Christ. He is a gifted child.”

Before Sunday’s concert, LaVaine Murphy said the family had two-thirds of the money it needs for the seven-week program at Meadowmount.

Tobiah Murphy said he is grateful for the support he has received. After his high-school studies, he plans to enter a music conservatory to develop his talents.

“It means a great deal,” he said. “I appreciate everyone who is supporting me.”
