Severe thunderstorms are expected after midnight today across extreme Southeast Kansas and portions of western Missouri, according to the National Weather Service station at Springfield.
Damaging wind gusts in excess of 70 mph and hail to the size of golf balls are the primary severe-weather risks. An isolated tornado or two cannot be ruled out.
A strong storm system will continue to gather strength over the Central Plains today. A cold front will begin to head eastward overnight and approach the Missouri-Kansas border during the early-morning hours. Thunderstorms should develop between midnight and 4 a.m.
Spotter activation likely will be needed along the state line after midnight tonight.
