Felony drug charges have been filed in connection with several recent traffic stops by Jasper County deputy sheriffs.
Virgil L. Sargent, 32, and Jacob H. Stephens, 27, both of Joplin, were charged with creation of a controlled substance after several items used in the manufacture of methamphetamine allegedly were found in a vehicle stopped by a deputy at Seventh Street and McKinley Avenue.
The Sheriff’s Department said Stephens was found to have outstanding warrants for failure to appear in court on a previous felony charge of drug possession, and misdemeanor charges of driving while his license was revoked, resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Jose Bou, 36, of Joplin, was charged with felony possession of marijuana in connection with a traffic stop Thursday night at the Flying J Travel Plaza on Route FF on the southeast side of Joplin. Bou was a passenger in a vehicle from which a deputy noticed a strong odor of marijuana emanating as he approached. A bag containing 95 grams of marijuana allegedly was discovered under Bou’s seat.
The Sheriff’s Department also arrested Megan Smith, 23, of Lamar, during a traffic stop Thursday at U.S. Highway 71 and Central Avenue at Carthage. Smith allegedly tried to dispose of a medicine bottle containing cocaine and some pills. She was charged with felony possession.
