Almost 100 units of red blood cells, along with several units of platelets, were distributed to four hospitals Saturday night in the wake of the devastating evening.
The storms prompted several area hospitals to make rare weekend calls for blood from Community Blood Center of the Ozarks (CBCO).
Freeman Health System and St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin, McCune-Brooks Hospital in Carthage and St. John’s Hospital in Berryville, Ark., received the blood to treat numerous injuries in the hours after the storms.
Over the course of the past few weeks, donors to CBCO had replenished blood stocks to optimum three-day supply levels.
“This is exactly the reason why a locally-controlled blood provider works so well,” said Don Thomson, CBCO executive director. “We were able to respond in a matter of a few hours to a crisis within our service region. We never know when extra blood might be needed.
“The donors that give blood on a regular basis are what allow us to respond in times of emergency. We’re thankful that we had the blood on hand and thankful for the steady, constant flow of life that comes from our donors. Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims of these devastating events.”
Chris Pilgrim, spokesman for the CBCO, said the center has not issued an appeal for blood to replace the 100 units that were used over the weekend.
“This is not an appeal for blood, but a synopsis of how much blood was needed to treat injuries from last weekend’s storms,’’ he said.
