R-8 principal, aide resign in wake of behavior probe

The principal and a teacher aide at Cecil Floyd Elementary School have resigned in the wake of a Joplin R-8 School District investigation into accusations about their behavior.
The Board of Education voted in closed session Tuesday night to accept a resignation letter from Principal Evan Mense. The board will fulfill the terms of his contract, which call for him to receive an annual salary of $76,364.
Superintendent Jim Simpson said the investigation that led to discipline against Mense and teacher aide Tierre Fields is now closed.
“This unfortunate event is behind us,” Simpson said. “We look forward to a great year at Cecil Floyd next year.”
Fields also submitted a letter of resignation to the district. Fields was not a contracted employee, so the board did not vote on his employment.
Mense and Fields last week were placed on leave in connection with what Simpson said was an investigation based on accusations about inappropriate behavior and neglect of duty.
School officials are keeping mum on the accusations and the findings of the investigation. Simpson said the two men were not charged with any criminal behavior. Efforts by the Globe to obtain comment from the men last week were unsuccessful.
Assistant Principal Elaina Edman will finish the year as Cecil Floyd’s principal. The district will begin the search for a new principal today.
The board discussed the matter in closed session for about 45 minutes.
In other business, the board:
n Approved an aggregate 4.2 percent raise for district employees. The raises will cost an additional $1.8 million and will be a part of the budget for the 2008-09 school year.
“I’m pleased we can offer that,” board member Ashley Micklethwaite said. “That will help teachers with rising costs and make us more competitive.”
n Approved a motion to solicit bids for the construction of asphalt walking tracks at Eastmorland and McKinley elementary schools.
