Several arrested on drug charges

Two vehicle stops and a pedestrian check by Joplin police on Thursday led to felony drug arrests of three adults and the detention of a juvenile on a drug charge.

A police officer saw a vehicle circling in the area of the Walgreen’s store at 20th and Main streets about 4 a.m. before parking at the store. Lt. Brian Lewis of the Joplin Police Department said that when a male and female occupant of the vehicle came back out of the store and began walking away from the car, the officer recognized the male as having some outstanding warrants and stopped them.

Travis B. Tyler, 26, was arrested on the city warrants. A drug-sniffing dog called to the scene alerted on the vehicle and a search turned up a magnetic key box under the passenger side of the car allegedly containing a bag of methamphetamine and five morphine pills, Lewis said. Tyler also was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance.

Lewis said a traffic stop at Seventh Street and Porter Avenue at 10:44 p.m. led to the arrest of the driver, Hakeem H. Bailey, 28, 1320 S. Kentucky Ave., and passenger Robin M. McLaughlin, 30, 2216 S. Virginia Ave.

Bailey was arrested for driving while intoxicated. Lewis said McLaughlin alleged nervous behavior led to a search of the vehicle and her purse. A bag containing meth allegedly was found in the purse and she was placed under arrest. Another bag containing crack cocaine allegedly was found on her person at Joplin City Jail, Lewis said. When Bailey allegedly informed police that the cocaine found on McLaughlin actually belonged to him, both were charged with possession of a controlled substance.

A male juvenile was detained following a traffic stop at 10:35 p.m. near 20th Street and Indiana Avenue. Lewis said the vehicle was stopped for blinking its bright lights several times at the intersection. He said the driver’s insurance was expired and the officer could smell marijuana in the car. A search of the vehicle using a drug-sniffing police dog allegedly turned up a bag with a brick of marijuana weighing more than 50 grams and a marijuana grinder.

The teen was turned over to juvenile authorities, Lewis said.
