By Melissa Dunson mdunson@joplinglobe.com During the 17th annual Day of Caring on Wednesday, nearly 200 volunteers from area businesses donated their time to local United Way organizations. Camri Jacobson, human resources manager for General Mills, spent part of her afternoon at the Community Clinic. “It gives us the chance to show our other team members we’re serious about giving back to the community where we live, work and play,” she said. Jacobson was one of eight General Mills employees who volunteered at the clinic. Kristi Santee, risk manager for General Mills, said she would return to volunteer at the clinic after her Day of Caring experience. “I love this kind of stuff,” Santee said. “This is the kind of thing I live for.” Across the Joplin area, volunteers painted, cooked, taught and sorted for nonprofit organizations including Lafayette House, the Boys & Girls Club, Children’s Haven and the Girl Scouts. Leslie Grissom, kitchen manager for the Salvation Army, was all smiles as members of the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce staff helped prepare, serve and clean up after the daily lunch. The local Salvation Army offers free lunch every day of the year, regularly feeding more than 150 people a day. Grissom said it takes about six people to put on the lunch, and she has a budget of only $42 a day, so volunteers and donations are an essential part of the daily operation. “This is fantastic. We aren’t able to do what we do without volunteers,” Grissom said of the Day of Caring. “This shows our clients that there are recognizable figures in the community that care enough to show up here.” For Lauren Hieger, a newscaster for KODE-TV, the Day of Caring was a way to get personally involved in the community in a way in which she could see the people she was helping. “I’ve covered the event before, but this is my first year volunteering,” Hieger said. “It’s a good, hands-on activity that gets me out of the newsroom and see personally how it’s going to affect people.” Valerie Horvath, director of marketing for the United Way of Southwest Missouri, said the event not only helps the organizations accomplish long-term projects, but it also helps connect volunteers with areas of service.
