Historic school to get face-lift

SARCOXIE, Mo. — A Carthage couple will finance the renovation and restoration of the historic Cave Spring School near Sarcoxie.

A charitable fund established by John and Carolyn Phelps will allow for the reconstruction of the building’s chimney, installation of a new roof and extensive work on the exterior brick, said Bill Putnam, executive director of the Community Foundation of Southwest Missouri, which helps administer the fund. The Phelpses will pay the bills for the work as they are submitted, and they could total about $50,000, Putnam said.

The Phelpses expressed an interest in donating money toward the school after reading news reports about the building’s deteriorating condition.

“They have an interest in preserving historical buildings,” Putnam said.

The Globe’s efforts to reach the couple for comment were unsuccessful Wednesday.

In 2005, Cave Spring School was put on Missouri’s list of its 10 Most Endangered Historic Places by the Missouri Alliance for Historic Preservation, a nonprofit organization that promotes the preservation of historic sites and compiles the list.

Helen Hunter, who attended school at Cave Spring, nominated the building for the list and is among those who have been working to save it for the past two years.

“We are real excited about it,” she said about the assistance.

Hunter said renovation of the brickwork, including replacement of any damaged or missing bricks and cleaning up old mortar, will be the first work done on the building. That should begin in about four to six weeks, she said.

The original Cave Spring School was built with logs and stood about a half-mile from its current location, according to historical records. It was moved to its current location between 1838 and 1840, and was built with bricks. During the Civil War, the school was transformed into the headquarters for Company C of the 76th Regiment of the Union Militia.

From 1865 to 1866, Cave Spring School served as the interim courthouse of Jasper County while the courthouse in Carthage, which was destroyed during the Civil War, was rebuilt.

The damage the school sustained during the war soon overtook the building. In the 1870s, it was torn down and reconstructed with many if not all of the original bricks.
