wkennedy@joplinglobe.com A Joplin rainfall record that has stood for 75 years more than likely will be broken this month. In June 1932, Joplin logged 14.12 inches of rain. It is the wettest June on record. With half of this month not even over, Joplin already has received 13.86 inches of moisture. Joplin needs only an additional 0.27 inches to set a new monthly rainfall record for June, according to Jerry Claycomb, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service station in Springfield. “This is the second-wettest June for Joplin ever,” Claycomb said. “Southwest Missouri is in the middle of a battle between the dry air off to the east and the moist air over Kansas. “Right now (Wednesday afternoon), the storms are west of Joplin in Labette County, Kan. If the storms do make it over Joplin, you’re looking at heavy rain again.” So far this month, five daily rainfall records have been set. Joplin logged 1.92 inches on the first day of the month. The next day, 2.39 inches fell. On Sunday, 3.86 inches fell. On Monday, 3.60 inches were recorded. The fifth daily record was set Tuesday, when the total was 1.89 inches. For the year, Joplin has received 31.28 inches of moisture in all forms, according to the National Weather Service. The normal amount expected by June 13 is 19.36 inches. This places Joplin 11.92 inches above normal for the year. The wetness of June is reflected in a new flow record for Shoal Creek at the U.S. Geological Survey river monitor in Joplin’s Wildcat Park. Matthew Barnhart, spokesman for Missouri American Water Co. in Joplin, said the highest daily flow for Shoal Creek was recorded Tuesday. The rate was 7,500 cubic feet per second. The previous record was 5,250 cubic feet per second in 1995. “That should be compared to the drought conditions we were experiencing last year,” Barnhart said. “It was flowing at 50 to 60 cubic feet per second last year at this time.” Claycomb, with the National Weather Service, said a dry, easterly wind was flowing over the Joplin area Wednesday, with a line of thunderstorms to the west in Labette County. “That line is not moving very much, and the easterly flow of dry air should continue for the next several days,” he said. “But there is a chance the moisture could surge eastward again late Thursday and into Friday. “It’s very possible that once they form, there will be nothing — no upper-level winds — to push them out. Joplin would be looking at heavy rain again.”
