Published June 15, 2007 12:00 am - A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a column about having to leave a float trip two days early to come back and watch my 9-year-old daughter Emma’s dance recital.
Some people indicated that they thought I was sort of whining in that column. Some people indicated that they thought I was wrong to complain about having to leave a float trip early to watch Emma’s dance recital. Some people even thought I was being a “(*&% jerk.” And, of course, when I say “some people,” I mean my wife.
The only reason I bring this up is because I spent Thursday night in Kansas City watching the St. Louis Cardinals play the Kansas City Royals, which is pretty cool. The thing is, I also could have spent Wednesday night in Kansas City watching the St. Louis Cardinals play the Kansas City Royals, but I decided not to. That’s right. I passed on an extra night of watching the St. Louis Cardinals play baseball.

Mike Pound: Last day of camp trumps Cards' seats

By Mike Pound

Globe columnist

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a column about having to leave a float trip two days early to come back and watch my 9-year-old daughter Emma’s dance recital.

I know!

The reason I opted not to go watch baseball in Kansas City on Wednesday night was because of Emma. See, Thursday was Emma’s last day at Maryann Mitts’ Missouri Southern State University basketball camp. Emma loves going to Maryann Mitts’ basketball camp, and the last day of camp is by far the most fun. So, I figured that since Emma loves basketball camp so much, I should show up to watch her last day of camp. That’s why I passed on the baseball game Wednesday night.

I should point out that the tickets I had for Wednesday night’s game were for great seats — the kind of seats that normally I look down at from way up high and go, “Gee, I wonder what lucky jerk gets to sit there?”

Those kind of seats.

Now “some people” may be thinking: “You jerk, let me see if I can understand this. Two weeks ago, you were whining about leaving a float trip early to watch Emma’s dance recital. But now, you’re practically giddy about skipping a baseball game where you had great seats just to watch Emma at basketball camp?”

To “some people,” I would respond by saying, “So what’s your point?”

The reason I was sort of whining about leaving a float trip early to watch Emma’s dance recital was because — follow me here — it was a dance recital. The reason I’m not whining about skipping a baseball game (that the Cards won, by the way) to watch Emma’s last day at basketball camp is because — again, follow me here — it was basketball camp.

See the difference?

A dance recital involves people dancing. Now, I’m a guy, which means I don’t like to dance. I never have. So it stands to reason that since I don’t like to dance, I really wouldn’t want to watch other people dance. Well, at least not as much as I would want to be on a float trip.

Now, basketball camp involves people playing basketball. Again, I’m a guy, which means I like to play basketball. So it stands to reason that since I like to play basketball, I would like to watch other people play basketball. Heck, I like basketball so much that sometimes at home, I’ll even watch an NBA game on TV.
