rmckinney@joplinglobe.com BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — A planned expansion of Atec Steel Fabrication and Construction is expected to double employment at the plant, from 30 to 60, according to company statements. The company said it has secured two contracts worth more than $20 million to supply material for 25 tanks at each of two ethanol production plants. The tanks will be installed by union contractors at each site. Atec supplies steel storage tanks used in the petroleum, renewable fuels, power, water and wastewater markets. Its tanks are welded on location upon delivery. “Our ability to help secure raw materials at a reduced cost to the end user, along with our fabrication capabilities and detailed project schedules sealed the deal for us,” said Rick Clifton, vice president of sales and marketing, in a written statement. Contacted by phone, Clifton declined to identify the company’s customers. Noel Garrett, Atec general manager, said in a prepared statement that a new stainless-steel production line would be constructed within the next 60 days to help meet the increased demand for tanks. “The new stainless line will allow us to serve a growing demand for field-weld stainless tanks,” Garrett said in the statement. He said the stainless-steel tank market is being driven by a large number of ethanol plants under construction. The company’s factory in Baxter Springs has more than 100,000 square feet of manufacturing space.
