NEOSHO, Mo. — The city of Neosho plans to begin soliciting bids this month for the expansion and renovation of the Newton County Senior Citizens Center, and it still hopes to have the work substantially complete by January, officials said Thursday.

Advertisements for bids will be placed Wednesday in almost a half-dozen publications in Northwest Arkansas and Southwest Missouri, said Desiree Bridges, communications manager for the city. The deadline for bids to be submitted is July 10.

“We just want to get a large scope,” Bridges told members of the Senior Citizens Committee on Thursday. The committee is advising the City Council on the project.

Plans call for a 2,200-square-foot addition that would allow for an expanded pool room, game room and reading area. The layout for much of the existing center would be reconfigured to include remodeled and expanded restrooms and offices, a multipurpose room with spaces for meetings, a kitchenette, and an enlarged fitness room.

With a July 10 deadline, the Senior Citizens Committee could have a bid recommendation ready for the City Council by July 17, said Gib Garrow, a committee member.

Seniors have said they hope the work can be complete in time for a January pool tournament involving more than a half-dozen senior centers in the area, including Joplin, Bentonville, Ark., and Grove, Okla.

The center has two pool tables and limited space for seating. The expansion would provide for six pool tables and seating for 40 people.

Bridges said the work likely would take about nine months to complete, but that the city likely would ask the contractor to have enough of the expansion done so the pool tournament could take place.

Also on Thursday, Bridges said the city is still exploring where to store the Centennial Mural that was removed from Municipal Auditorium this week.

The mural was removed and separated into three pieces, each of which is housed in a crate, so asbestos-removal work can be done at the auditorium.

The senior center and the Neosho/Newton County Library have been floated as potential new homes for the mural.

But Bridges said the city has to find a climate-controlled storage place for the mural pieces until the city decides where to put it. If it did choose the senior center, the building could not accommodate the mural for about another six months, she said.
