The 11-year-old, and about 200 other people, did that and more during a cleanup Thursday night. “It’s just a wreck out here,” Tristan said as he shoveled sand onto the infield between first and second bases. “But I’m glad everyone came out to help clean up. I’m thankful to them.” Parents and children shoveled dirt and sand from the north end of the park, after flooding washed it away earlier this week. They also cleaned out concession stands and restrooms, picked up debris, removed fence posts, cleared fences, and did other tasks. Jim Davis, president of Joplin North Little League, said he was overwhelmed by the response. “I’m flabbergasted,” Davis said. “For one day’s notice, look at what we have out here. It’s unbelievable.” The damage to the fields was hard for youngsters in the league to take, including Christina Faris’ 7-year-old son, Blaine Roach. “He was upset,” Faris said. “He saw how bad the field was, and he thought the season was going to be over.” Debi Hill and her son, Keaton, had the same reaction. “We about died when we saw the fields,” Hill said. “To see them completely covered, we were shocked.” Players from the Joplin Slashers baseball team removed fence posts from Petland Field, which is at the south end of the park. Coach Dennis Vilela said almost the entire team helped with the cleanup.
