dspellman@joplinglobe.com NEWTONIA, MO. — A Pineville artist whose paintings have focused on American Indians has been tabbed to paint a mural for the Newtonia Civil War Mansion, officials said Friday. Doug Hall was selected to paint the mural, which will depict the participation of American Indian troops during the first battle of Newtonia on Sept. 30, 1862, partly because of his background in the area, according to the Newtonia Battlefields Protection Association. “Because this battle is believed to be the only Civil War battle which included regiments or brigades of Native American soldiers, the mural will highlight the involvement of Native Americans,” the association stated in a release. “Hall is considered one of the nation’s finest painters of Indian subjects and peoples.” Hall told the Globe in a Friday phone interview that the association approached him about the mural. “I did not even know it was in the works, to tell you the truth,” he said. Hall, a native of Neosho, said he has been interested in American Indians, horses and woodlands ever since he was a boy. He has done a number of oil paintings depicting these subjects. “I have literally been fascinated with Indians my whole life,” Hall said. One element of the Newtonia mural that has already stirred his interest, he said, will be the clothing worn by the American Indians during the battle of Newtonia. The Indians, he said, wore a combination of regular military uniforms and their native costume. The aim, he said, is to “capture a moment in time” from the battle. No timetable has been established yet for the mural project, according to the association. Hall said the first step will be for him to research the battle. Afterward, he can start crafting sketches of what the mural would look like and present those sketches to the association for approval. Last month, the Eastern Shawnee Tribe and Bordertown Bingo pledged $6,000 toward the creation of a mural for the Newtonia Civil War Mansion. The Newton County Tourism Council also announced it will donate $4,000 to the project.
